New Delhi, 09 Feb 2022 [Fik/News Sources]: Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai reacted to the hijab controversy in Karnataka, saying "refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying" and "leaders must stop the marginalisation of Muslim women."

Taking to Twitter, Malala wrote,"Refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying. Objectification of women persists, for wearing less or more. Indian leaders must stop the marginalisation of Muslim women."

Malala made the remarks while sharing a news report on the hijab row where several Muslim students across various government colleges in Karnataka were banned from entering college premises wearing hijab.

The Muslim students filed a petition in Karnataka High Court seeking an order that declares wearing hijab as their fundamental right. The petition hearing will continue tomorrow.

Meanwhile, protests erupted across several districts and police resorted to force to disperse the crowd. Section 144 has been imposed in Davangere, Shimoga and Bagalkot after protesters resorted to stone pelting.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai ordered closure of all schools and colleges until the matter is resolved. Karnataka High Court too urged all people to maintain peace.
